Italian Environmental Recycling Information

What are the new regulations set out in the Italian Recycling Scheme and when do they come into effect? Here is what you need to know to ensure your products are compliant in Italy.

What is changing?

According to new legislation, set out in CONAI (a private non-profit consortium in Italy that ensure the recycling & recovery target of packaging waste set out by law is achieved) Legal Requirements for packaging UK will now mean it is mandatory to include the packaging material’s identification code (under decision 129/97/EC) and instructions on how to dispose of it. For multi-component packaging (where components can be separated by hand) information must be included on the material code and disposal of each individual component. It is recommended that for multi-component packaging, there is a written description provided to help consumers separate and dispose of them properly. A statement to ‘check your local municipality rules’ is recommended to be included on all labels.

There is the possibility of using QR codes or in cases where the package is smaller, referencing a website. However, using QR codes may pose some risks, as the information is not as accessible

These changes come into effect on the 1st January 2022. There is no transition period it and it becomes mandatory then. Any products made on and thereafter January 1st must comply with these new rules.

Fines for not complying with the new recycling scheme can be anything from 5000 to 40,000 Euros.

How does this compare to other countries in the EU?

It seems unlikely that there will be mutual recognition of these rules around the EU. Some countries already have their own schemes in place, or they are looking to put them in place, this includes recycling and deposit schemes. For example:

  • France - Triman Logo

  • Nordics - Deposit Scheme Pant Logo

  • Netherlands – Deposit Scheme Statiegeld

  • Germany – Deposit Scheme Pfand

The lack of harmonisation across the EU and around the world can make recycling information on labels complicated to navigate. If you would like some guidance on the best approach for your products and markets of sale, our Food Labelling expert UK can help.
