Product Registrations: A Basic Guide by Ashbury

Ensuring you follow food labelling regulations is an important part of launching any product. However, even if your food label is completely legal, there can be other regulatory hoops to jump through before your product can make it to shelf. While Ashbury provide food labelling services as our core solution, one of the most frequently asked questions we receive relates to product registrations. In this blog, we look at what these are and how you can go about getting yours sorted.
What are product registrations?
Depending on the country of sale and the type of product you intend to sell, you may have to register your product with specific agencies before you launch. A product registration informs the Competent Authority in your intended market that you will be launching a product – if they accept your registration the product will be authorised for sale. This process also helps you to understand the food labelling regulations your product will be subject to so you can ensure complete labelling compliance

You can gain notification as a way of proving that your products have been authorised and can be sold as long as food labelling requirements are met.

What products need to be registered?

Not all products require registration, in some countries the list is extensive and in others kept to a minimum. Unfortunately, there is no central list of products that require registration or notification.

Food supplements can often require registration; for example, in the Republic of Ireland, all marketed food supplements must be notified if it is the first time on the market. However this is not true for GB where products like novel foods, additives and flavours require registration.

Which countries require registration?

Each country, even within the EU, will have a slightly different approach to registration and notification and a different Competent Authority handling the process for that jurisdiction. This can make it difficult to know where to go to complete the registration. Most countries will have some sort of process to cover high-risk products such as cosmetics, food and feed additives and medical products.

How to prepare

Competent Authorities keep a register of all products that can be sold in their market – you can browse this to see if your product is already on here – for example the EU Register of Feed Additives

As a food labelling company, Ashbury can’t do the registration for you. However, we can guide you in the right direction and establish whether your products need to be registered and who with. We can also refer you to providers who can do the registration and notification for you.

What happens if I don’t register my products?

If you fail to carry out the proper registration and notification processes, you could be faced with heavy penalties including imprisonment. Your products will be withdrawn from sale until the proper processes have been followed.
